Chapter 20

Nate

After my big confession, I feel as though a huge weight has fallen off my shoulders. I feel better. So much better I can hardly believe it, and seeing Ada in my apartment only makes my heart soar further. I like having her close. I like it when she’s near me.

We stay at Perk Me Up until closing time and help Meryiah close everything down. She heads home to be with her family, but the rest of us take the party back upstairs.

We spend the rest of the evening laughing, eating more dessert and playing a board game I didn’t even know I had. Rocky is completely worn out by the end of the night, and when Layla and Beccky announce they have to leave, he’s already fast asleep in his doggy bed.

It’s well past midnight when Audrey and Jacob collect their things to go home. I look at Ada trying to decipher her mood. I can’t tell whether she wants to leave with her friends or stay a little while longer alone with me. Well, with Rocky as a chaperone.

Ada and Audrey speak in hushed tones by the doorway. I pretend to do the dishes, but my ears strain to hear what she has decided to do. Will she stay or will she go?

And then Ada reappears in the kitchen and it’s like a ray of sunshine just shone into my life, even though it’s the middle of the night.

“Hey,” she says easily, and a smile lights up her face.

“I thought I’d stay for a while longer,” Ada explains, shifting her weight from one foot to another. She plays with the silver charm on her necklace. “I thought I could help you out with the dishes or something. Is that alright?”

“Yeah,” I say softly. “It’s perfect.”

We head into the kitchen and I put the music on louder while we clean up the mess. There’s plates and glasses everywhere, but it’s easy enough to clean up my home.

Ada chatters about her new classes, telling me how much she’s enjoying them.

“I didn’t know how much I’d like making videos,” she tells me, stacking plates in a precarious pile to carry to the sink. “But it’s all the things I like about photos, only more. I’m actually really excited for some of the projects we have to do.”

I nod and ask questions, just enjoying her company. Doing the normal, boring parts of life feels like a pleasure with her. I don’t have my chores when she does them with me. They feel like something I want to do with her to help.

When the dishwasher is running and the tables all cleaned, we plop down on the couch and high five each other for a job well done.

“Thank you,” Ada says quietly. She sits
